Air Rifle Maintenance: Cleaning and Care Guide

Learn how to maintain and clean your air rifle or air pistol

An air rifle is a weapon that uses air pressure to launch projectiles. To ensure good performance and extend the lifespan of your airgun, it is important to carry out proper and regular maintenance.

Check below the main care tips for maintaining your air rifle, from cleaning and lubrication to storage and safety.

Airgun cleaning

Regular cleaning of airguns is essential to keep them in good condition. With regular use, it is common for residue and dirt to build up inside the barrel and chamber, which can affect accuracy and overall performance.

To clean your air rifle, you will need some basic tools such as a nylon brush, a cleaning rod, cleaning solvent and a clean, dry cloth. Follow the main steps below:

  1. Make sure the airgun is unloaded before starting. Remove the magazine and check that there is no pellet in the chamber.

  2. Use the nylon brush to clean the inside of the barrel and chamber. Run the brush several times to remove all residue. Then use the cleaning rod to remove any remaining debris.

  3. Apply a small amount of cleaning solvent to a clean, dry cloth. Use it to clean all external parts of the airgun, including the receiver and stock.

  4. Once cleaning is complete, lubricate the moving parts using a gun lubricant. This ensures smooth operation and extends the lifespan of your airgun.

In addition to these tips, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning your air rifle.

Airgun storage

Proper storage of your air rifle is essential to keep it in good condition and extend its lifespan. Here are some important tips:

  1. Store in a dry and cool place: Humidity is one of the biggest enemies of an air rifle. Store it in a dry, cool environment, ideally between 10ºC and 30ºC, with humidity below 60%.

  2. Use a protective cover: Using a protective case helps prevent exposure to dust and dirt while protecting against scratches and moisture.

  3. Always store the airgun unloaded: Never store your air rifle with pellets in the chamber or magazine. This helps prevent accidents and prolongs the lifespan of the spring or gas system.

  4. Keep it in a secure place: Store your air rifle in a safe location, away from children and unauthorized persons. Ideally, use a locked cabinet or safe.

  5. Store in a safe position: Keep the air rifle positioned safely, either pointing upwards or downwards.
