Firearm Silencer: How does it work?
What is a firearm silencer?
Commonly referred to as a silencer, noise suppressor, or sound muffler, it is a device that reduces the speed at which gases produced by the gunpowder explosion are expelled from the firearm’s barrel, thus decreasing the sound of the gunshot.
What is it like?
It is a cylinder that is placed at the end of the firearm barrel and consists of multiple chambers separated by metal baffles with holes in the center.
How does it work?
When the projectile passes through the silencer, it goes through ports or holes and spreads out into the chambers before being expelled. Silencers allow atmospheric gases to reach the projectile before the shot is fired, reducing the sound of the gunshot.
Despite its name – silencer – the sound of the shot is not completely suppressed and resembles a whip-like noise. However, there are specific firearms used for firing tranquilizers equipped with silencers that produce low levels of noise.
Can silencers be used on all firearms?
No, silencers are not effective on shotguns or revolvers. In shotguns, the velocity of the ammunition is typically higher than the speed of sound, which inherently produces significant noise. However, there is manufacturing of silencers for shotguns; however, most of the time, it is to not make the explosion in the gun barrel evident.
Regarding revolvers, silencers are not used because they do not prevent the gases from escaping through the revolver’s cylinder.
