What Is Hop-Up in Airsoft?
The Hop-Up is a component used in some Airsoft guns, designed to adjust the trajectory of the BB (plastic pellet) based on aerodynamic principles. By adjusting this part, you can make the BB rise, drop, or achieve maximum possible range.
Hop-Up is essentially a small rubber piece inside the gun’s barrel that applies pressure to the top of the BB.
When the BB is pushed forward by the air from the gearbox, the lower part of the BB exits first, while the Hop-Up holds it back just a fraction of a second longer—resulting in a “backspin” rotation.
A good example of this type of spin can be seen by turning a bicycle upside down and spinning the wheel. The air you feel moving with the wheel is similar to backspin.
The same thing happens to the BB: the air above the BB is pushed backward, and the air underneath is forced forward, against the direction of travel. In other words, the BB’s rotation causes the air on top to move faster, and the air below to move slower.
With faster-moving air above and slower air below, the upper airflow pulls harder than the lower one—creating lift.
What is the purpose of the Hop-Up?
Since the Hop-Up is a part that applies backspin to the BBs, it allows them to fly longer without dropping as quickly. This phenomenon, known as the Magnus effect, significantly improves both range and accuracy.
The backspin reduces air pressure on the top side of the BB, slowing its descent and keeping it in the air longer. Hop-Up units are essentially chambers with rubber buckings through which the BBs pass. Inside these chambers, a small bump (called a nub) gently presses the top of the BB for a brief moment, generating the backspin.
The rubber bucking allows for slight compression, helping the BB maintain speed while also ensuring the durability of the system.

How to Adjust the Hop-Up on an Airsoft Gun?
To properly adjust the Hop-Up, it’s important to first understand how it works. This system consists of a rubber piece inside the barrel of your replica that applies pressure to the top of the BB. Adjusting it involves increasing or decreasing that pressure to get the best possible trajectory.
Most replicas with adjustable Hop-Up units have a dial or gear that allows you to fine-tune the pressure. By turning it clockwise or counterclockwise, you’ll apply more or less pressure to the BB.
To tune your Hop-Up, you should be in a safe, open space with at least 30 meters of distance—either on private land with permission or at a proper airsoft field. Ideally, make the adjustments on a day with little or no wind, to avoid interference.
The first step is to load your airsoft gun with the BBs you plan to use during games, and fire a few test shots while carefully observing the trajectory.
If the BB drops sharply, gravity is pulling it down too early—meaning you need to increase the Hop-Up effect. Adjust the unit upwards; some replicas have (+/-) markings, while others may require some trial and error.
After the adjustment, shoot again and observe the BB’s path.
If it now curves upwards too much, you’ve applied too much Hop-Up and should reduce it slightly. The goal is to find the point where the BB flies in a straight and stable line before it naturally begins to drop.
