Present since the 15th century, these air rifles were mainly used for hunting and were capable of taking down animals such as wild boars with a single shot.

At that stage in history, these types of air rifles had several advantages over firearms, such as the ability to be used in any weather conditions, including rain or snow, situations in which firearms often failed due to their inability to ignite properly.

As these did not use gunpowder to propel projectiles, air rifles could also be fired in a relatively quiet manner, without producing sparks, smoke, or even flames at the moment of the shot. This reduced the risk of injuries and burns to the shooter and allowed them to remain concealed, whether in battle or during hunting.

In the past, firing a firearm was a time-consuming process involving several steps, from loading the gunpowder to inserting the bullet with a ramrod. In contrast, with an air rifle it was possible to fire more than 20 shots per minute, as was the case with the famous Girandoni rifle, considered by many experts to be the first pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) air rifle in history.
